In the run up to the general election I have spoken to the Liberal Democrat candidate, Charles West, on numerous occasions in the interest of fairness regarding his campaign materials such as newsletters where he refers to himself as a “senior local councilor” but fails to point out the council was a parish council in Church Stretton on which he served for a short time as a councilor because as a local councilor myself, I had actual senior local councilors telling me they found his statement offensive. I have also had to speak to him regarding the placement of his campaign signs such as the massive sign sticking out of a council hedge on Whitchurch Road in Shrewsbury.

Charles West has responded to the emails and conversations about the signs stating that they are all legal despite the guidance given to all candidates by the local council and electoral commission that all signs (other than small A4 lamp post signs) MUST be on private property and not on council or pubic land.

Whatever way you look at it, strapping two signs (one that has to be the largest campaign sign i’ve ever seen on a wooden post) into the middle of a public hedgerow and held in place with cable ties is clearly on public land and not in accordance with the standards issued to all candidates.

I wasn’t going to write about this, I was happy to speak to Charles West informally as a fellow candidate and let him rectify the situation himself with no harm done but because of his arrogant responses and that I find it disgusting that Charles West, a candidate that states that fairness is at the heart of his campaign, shows blatant contempt for the standards set by the local council and electoral commission and uses signs that are far to large and are situated on public land instead of having regulation signs on private property.

I have recorded a short video next to the signs on Sunday evening to illustrate my point. As of this morning (Wednesday 5 May) the signs are still there.

Is this fair to all of the other candidates who are conducting themselves in a professional and fair manner?

Is this fair to the Green Party, UKip, Impact Party, Conservative Party and myself as Labour Party candidate to have one candidate (for the Liberal Democrats) show total disrespect for the practice of electoral campaigning?

Is Charles West really someone who you want to honestly represent your views in parliament?

With the election just one day away, the time has come to decide if you want a Liberal Democrat MP who talks about fairness at any given opportunity but breaks campaign rules and carries out a very unfair campaign

From what I have seen so far, mainstream media coverage of Earth Hour has been very poor despite high profile locations all over the world participating including the the city of London and the Prime Minister himself at 10 Downing Street as well as landmark sites and cities all over the world. The new media or online coverage has been fantastic though with many websites, blogs and social networks profiles reporting and promoting the event in the run up the the 27 March and going dark during Earth Hour 2010. Over 620 blogs had pledged using The official wordpress plugin alone.

I am proud to have taken part both on and offline meaning that my blog and social network profiles going dark during the event. My blog was replaced with the screen previewed above. I encourage everyone to follow the link to the official Earth Hour website and pledge their support because Earth Hour may only be one hour of one day a year but the fight for awareness and action on environmental issues is happening every day. The official wordpress plugin that I used to replace this blog during the event can be found here and usually gets updated prior to next years Earth Hour event.

I am a Prospective Parliamentary candidate and I write a lot about elections and votes and community issues and I know that everyone has different view points and beliefs but the one thing that we must all agree on is that planet earth and the environment is our greatest and most fragile resource and regardless of who you are or what you do, we all depend on it for our own existence.

Supporting Earth Hour is a vote for raising awareness and igniting positive discussion on the environmental issues that impact ourselves and our future generations.

The aim of Earth Hour is to urge people all over the world to switch their lights off for one hour on the 27th Match 2010 at 20:30 (8:30 PM) to highlight the problem of climate change.

Earth Hour has become a symbol of global sustainability and mass activism with hundreds of millions of people taking part in last years Earth Hour event. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

Earth Hour 2010 takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm (local time) and as stated on the official Earth Hour website ‘is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to Asia to the Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world from all walks of life will turn off their lights and join together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet”

Jon Tandy, Local Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) for the Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency has today committed to:

Promote the interests of Britain’s pub goers

Champion well-run community pubs

Support the rebalancing alcohol taxation to support beer and pubs

Press for reform of beer tie to deliver a fair deal for consumers

Support the role of well-run pubs as solutions to alcohol misuse

These commitments are based on a campaign being run by CAMRA, The Campaign for Real Ale which is asking all Prospective Parliamentary Candidates whether they are willing to speak up for Beer Drinkers and Pub Goers. CAMRA’s new Beer Drinkers and Pub Goers Charter sets out a series of options for supporting well-run community pubs, local brewers and consumer rights.

Mike Benner, CAMRA’s Chief Executive welcomed Jon Tandy’s support for the Charter, saying:

“We are delighted that Jon Tandy has promised to work to promote the interests of beer drinkers and pub goers. Well-run pubs make a huge contribution to community life, each of which injects £80,000 into their local economy every year. Amid growing concern over the loss of more than 5 pubs a day, it is now more important than ever to support well-run community pubs, to promote local brewers and to protect the interests of consumers.”

Speaking after signing up to CAMRA’s Beer Drinkers and Pub Goers Charter, Jon Tandy said:

“I am proud to be speaking up for community pubs, local brewers and consumers. Well-run pubs are the bedrock of community life – they are part of the solution to the problem of alcohol misuse and not part of the problem. They deserve our support.”

I would like to take an opportunity to thank everyone for their support today with the demonstration to highlight the dangers of the Harlescott Crossroads in Shrewsbury.

Over 200 people turned out to voice their concerns and let the local council know that they are not willing to accept the dangerous crossroads that has already claimed one innocent life.

A big thank you to all of the supporters on and offline as I know many of you could not make it today due to work commitments etc but passed on their best wishes and support to myself and other people co-ordinating the campaign.

This campaign is about everyone whether you could make it today or not, its about the community standing together for positive change. It is everybody’s right to have a safe place to work, live and play.

The vast majority of drivers were positive and courteous and were tooting their horns and waving in support of the campaign and I am glad to say everything went very well and I truly hope that the increased coverage of the dangers will prompt the local council to make the changes to the lane layout before another life is lost.

You can support the campaign on Facebook or by writing to your local councillor to let them know how you feel about this issue. There is a petition online for you to register your name and support the campaign.

Claire Bennett and myself carried out radio interviews with BBC Shropshire and the newly launched ShropshireLive.com website and press photographers were in attendance at the event who were very positive towards our views.

Beacon Radio and Radio Shropshire also had live coverage from the event from local freelance journalist Chris Pritchard whom I also had a video interview with which can be seen below.
